Ayn Rand explains the necessity of capitalism to a free society. http://www.LibertyPen.com
– Ayn Rand “Capitalism was the only system in history where wealth was not acquired by looting, but by production, not by force, but by trade, the only system that stood for man’s right to his own mind, to his work, to his life, to his happiness, to himself.” – Ayn Rand
In this 1967 lecture, Ayn Rand argues that capitalism is the only moral social system — the only system which is consistent with man’s nature as a rational being and therefore the only system that protects his ability to engage in the kinds of productive activities that his life and happiness require. In writing Atlas Shrugged (1957) — the story of a man who said he would stop the motor of the world, and did — Rand had to define fully her new philosophy of reason, rational self-interest, and laissez-faire capitalism. Thereafter, and until her death in 1982, Rand amplified and explicated her “philosophy for living on earth” in a stream of books whose theoretical essays and cultural commentaries cover important topics across the five major branches of philosophy: metaphysics Ayn explains the flaws with critiques of capitalism and how they often aren't rational, why the 'capitalism' of today isn't the capitalism she advocates, why aiming to profit by taking advantage of others isn't congruent with capitalism, and why the laissez faire capitalism she *does* advocate is based on goodwill and justice, not deceit and plunder. The Ayn Rand Lexicon: This mini-encyclopedia of Objectivism is compiled from Ayn Rand’s statements on some 400 topics in philosophy, economics, psychology and history. Capitalism: The Unknown Ideal is a collection of essays, mostly by the philosopher Ayn Rand, with additional essays by her associates Nathaniel Branden, Alan Greenspan, and Robert Hessen.

Ayn Rand ( / aɪn /; born Alisa Zinovyevna Rosenbaum; February 2, [ O.S. January 20] 1905 – March 6, 1982) was a Russian-American writer and philosopher. She is known for her two best-selling novels, The Fountainhead and Atlas Shrugged, and for developing a philosophical system she named Objectivism. Ed Locke’s succinct review in Capitalism Magazine of The Tyranny of Merit: What’s Become of the Common Good? brings to mind this quote by Ayn Rand from her essay, “What Is Capitalism? The tribal notion of “the common good” has served as the moral justification of most social systems—and of all tyrannies—in history.

There once was a time when I was enamored by the philosophy of Ayn Rand. An émigré from the Soviet Union, the influential novelist and founder of Objectivism had an enthusiasm for market capitalism and a hatred of communism that I found entrancing.
